Що вражає найбільше у кожній книзі Агати Крісті - так це те, як вона могла бути настільки неперевершеною у придумуванні детективних загадок і заплутуванні слідів, і водночас настільки не розуміти людську натуру, або ж просто вперто її ігнорувати.
І це особливо іронічно, враховуючи те, що Еркюль Пуаро - це ніби як детектив-психолог, що знаходить вбивць і підозрюваних не завдяки доказам, а просто аналізуючи людей навколо.
І тут ми ступаємо на територію спойлерів.
Читати книги Крісті виходить запоєм, буквально за вечір, але водночас вони залишають ні з чим - без жодного переживання за жодного з персонажів, бо всі вони, здається, зовсім не здатні на сильні почуття. Тільки емоції - і ті Крісті наче підбирає не до ладу.
Або ж письменниця просто "відсікає" все, що це слугує сюжету та розгадуванню загадки - і хоч я й абсолютно розумію, навіщо, це все ще створює дивне відчуття неповноцінності усіх героїв.
Але в чому Агаті Крісті й справді немає рівних - так це у заплутаних злочинах, які мені ще не вдалося розгадати жодного разу, хоч це вже далеко не перша її книга, прочитана мною. І кожного разу здається, що ось зараз я точно підозрюю того, кого слід - і кожного разу виявляється, що я йду по навмисно і дуже обережно викладеному хибному слідові.

Наприклад - капелюшниця Дженні Драйвер дізнається про смерть Карлотти Адамс - а та, на секундочку, її близька подруга. І її горя та шоку вистачає рівно на одну фразу, а тоді вона вже радісно обідає з Пуаро і Гастінгсом, не згадуючи про втрату близької людини більше жодним словом. Коли вона йде, вона вже посміхається і ледь не фліртує з Пуаро. This was a solid Hercule Poirot read, with all the hallmarks of a classic Christie novel — red herrings, many possible suspects, and withholding just enough detail that you're at Poirot's mercy to fit it all together. As this followed right after Peril at End House, I had a correct inkling of how it would resolve, but there were so many other possibilities along the way that I was never sure, and I missed big pieces of the puzzle. I mean, the idea that it was Carlotta who went to the dinner party? It never occurred to me — I thought Jane and the butler were in it together.
Also, Hastings has stopped being so idiotic, which is a relief. Christie has toned that down a lot since the first books. (The exchange between him and Poirot about how helpful he is as an "average man" was great, though.)
I have mixed feelings about it on audio — the narrator was fantastic and did a wide range of accents well, which made it fun to listen to, but the format also precluded me from easily going back to refer to clues and names. That's probably just as well since I'm never able to solve the whole thing anyway.
I wouldn't put this in the top 10 of Poirot novels, but it's still worth reading if you like a good mystery.

This one was AWESOME so much better than the last Christie I read… Jane Wilkinson you will always be famous in my house.
I enjoyed this one. It had one or two things in it, that were a little too obscure as far as ‘clues’ go, but overall when Poirot does his big reveal, it all made sense. Surprisingly, Hastings did not irritate me half as much as in some of his other books, so that upped my enjoyment.
