"Again, meditative people will find a charm in a certain consonancy between the aspect of the city and its odds and stirring history. Few places, if any, offer a more barbaric display of contrast to the eye"

Edinburgh. Picturesque Notes, 1878
Robert Louis Stevenson
Introduced by Alexander McCall Smith
Manderley Press 2021

"Stevenson's writing strikes the twenty- first century ear as still being fresh and intensely readable.... we are in the company of an agreeable and relaxed guide giving us anecdotal run-down on Edinburgh over a cup of coffee"
Alexander McCall Smith

A delightfully rich portrait of Victorian Auld Reekie, which thunders with period detail just as much as modern familiarity. The prose is wonderful, and though I could have picked several passages as my favourite, the best of all is surely:
”And when the Spring comes round, and the hawthorn begins to flower, and the meadows to smell of young grass, even in the richest of our streets, the country hilltops find out a young man’s eyes, and set his heart beating for travel and pure air.”

This lovely little book will speak to your soul, especially if you're as obsessed with Edinburgh as I am. It reads exactly as described in the introduction: the feeling of having a cup of coffee with Robert Louis Stevenson as he shares his local perspective on the city. It's dreamy and charming, but also features a few powerful stories, particularly the one about the collapsed house. It made me curious to explore more of his writing.
