I loved this book. The sentient house sprinkled in-between was fantastic. The recipes were fun. The stories of all the different lives that ended up under one roof was great.
It was also an interesting reminder of the US once upon a time saying, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," yet how hard, even in WWII fleeing Hitler, it was for immigrants to make it over and the challenges they faced once here.
It also delves into just how boxed in women were. Kate Quinn always does an amazing job establishing female friendships, as well as our resilience and ingenuity to carve a life for ourselves. The characters came from walks of life and places, but they all ended up in the same house and it all bloomed from there. I love bringing in real people or mixing the lives of real people into a character. I love the sprinkles of past book characters or topics. Favorite book this year of the ~60 I've read so far.
