Read this review @ my blog Wonderless Reviews

Zenith is a serialised Space Opera that is co-written by Sasha from abookutopia and Lindsay Cummings. At this moment in time it's only available as an ebook and is being released in four parts.

Given that this is technically a quarter of a book it is hard to do a complete review. Normally I'll summarise the story, but I'd honestly just be repeating everything that's mentioned in the Goodsread summary. I'm a huge fan of Sasha and I really want to read Lindsay's [b:The Murder Complex|13576132|The Murder Complex (The Murder Complex, #1)|Lindsay Cummings|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1385467089s/13576132.jpg|19158475] series so I was excited to read this because AN ALL GIRL SPACE CREW? SIGN ME UP.

I know this is only the first part, but I felt like the characters and world lacked depth. The writing seemed forced at times. We were just thrown into the world so there wasn't much (or any, really) world building. Andi and her crew are all pretty morally ambiguous which is something I love, but they just didn't feel completely real. It was great seeing a bunch of slightly murderous girls who definitely know how to handle themselves, but I have no way of telling whether they're complex or just two dimensional.

I think we were supposed to find Dex, who is the Bounty Hunter
Spoilerand a past relationship of Andi's who she then tried to kill
, to be the Token Attractive Bad Boy™ but honestly he just annoyed me. I can sense a love triangle brewing too, which I hope I'm wrong about.

We're introduced to a potential antagonist at the end of this first part named Nor who is a Queen on a dying planet and is seeking revenge. She seems like she'll be an interesting character. Revenge definitely seems to be the main theme of this story. Everyone wants it. So I'm curious to see how that plays out.

The first part was mostly just an introduction to the characters. Not much happened beside a few action sequences of Andi trying to stop her ship being taken by Dex. They were definitely some of the strongest parts of the book.

Even though I did have a few issues with this part, Zenith is a fun and quick read. If you're currently in a reading slump then I think this could help bring you out of it. I'll definitely be checking out the next parts!

I don’t know what to say about this book, in some parts it felt like it went on too long then other parts of the story went by too quickly. I wish they added more of a backstory or personality to Gilly and Breck, who were main characters just pushed to the side.

This book was gripping and I was intrigued right away. It's very short but I already feel connected to the characters. Knowing that Sasha (a you-tuber) was an author of this book made it even more awesome to read. It is Cinder meets Star Wars? Maybe even Illuminae but I have not yet read that. I loved this and cannot wait for the next installment! Great job ladies!

This is a great start to the story and it is well done. I liked the characters and I feel like things will only get better and more complex from here. I'm just not really a fan of serialized novels. On my NOOK this first part was only 56 pages and I read it in like 20 minutes.

OKAY YALL. This is kinda long but bear with me. I know that there are a lot of mixed reviews around Zenith, but I can definitively say: I actually liked it.

And I was worried I would hate it, because I’ve seen more bad reviews than good. But I never decide on the book until I’ve read it MYSELF, and I am both relieved and pleased with my opinion. I have watched Sasha on YouTube for... I guess about 5 years now! I really wanted to support her and her book and I was praying I would like it. I actually didn’t like Lindsay Cummings’ other series (at all), but I always like giving authors another chance.

Were there mistakes? Yes.
Were there a few plot holes? Yes.
Was the book perfect? No.

But… I liked it. I thought the world building was pretty good, and the characters were likable. There was a lot going on at the same time, and that sometimes me the book difficult to keep up with. The plot was good, and there were things that I saw coming in things that totally surprised me, too.
Honestly, I’m having trouble writing my thoughts about it so I’m just going to make a list of pros and cons.

—————————

WHAT I LIKED:
1) Girl power to the max!!! I really loved everyone on Andi’s crew.
2) Andi. She’s a flawed heroine, and that’s something I just really enjoy reading about. Sometimes I thought she was a tad bit dry but most of the time I enjoyed her.
3) Again, the world building. It took me a while to get used to everything, but once I did it was pretty easy to follow. I thought the names of planets and galaxies were really creative!
4) GILLY <3
5) the paperback cover is beautiful :)
6) Sasha and Lindsay did a great job adding diverse and colorful descriptions into their world. I thought all the different alien creatures and planets were so cool!!
6) The title is actually REALLY clever, imo. If y’all have read the book you’ll know what I’m talking about.
7) The action scenes were actually pretty well done!
8) IT’S IN SPACE. Dork alert.

~~~~~
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
1) The length. I thought that the book was just a little bit too long. Honestly I’m not sure what could have been cut out, but there were parts that I was just a little bored reading.
2) There were too many POV’s. By the end of the novel, I had everyone straight, but I was definitely confused and still sorting out who was who halfway through the novel. I totally forgot that Klaren and Nor even existed for a while. I don’t think they need to eliminate this, but just add more balance if they’re going to have so many POV‘s.
3) There were some plot holes that I won’t go into because of #spoilers. Some things didn’t add up.... Or maybe they’ll be addressed in Nexus...?
4) I thought Dex was a little bit one dimensional. He definitely had some backstory and personality, but I hope we get to see more of him in the next book. I think that will clear up some of my issues with him.
5) There are warnings that some readers need to know about… I didn’t take issue with them, but I know that others may might. These include torture, sexual assault/rape (not detailed/graphic but the reader is aware of it), and PTSD.
———————-
So overall, I’m impressed with the book. Yay!!
I just saw the new cover for Nexus released today, and it’s beautiful. I will be reading the next book! I can’t wait to see how Sasha’s writing will grow even more.
In the meantime, please excuse me while I go lose my mind reading Kingdom of Ash.
This was only a small preview but I can tell that it's embarrassingly overwritten. I thought I went in without judgement, but on the first page I already felt underwhelmed. The writing style is so disjointed, and the authors have brought nothing new to the sf genre. Was this edited before it was released? I don't know how you could get a book deal based off of this.
I could not make it through the book. I was lost between all the different chapters, changing the person all the time. There were chapters I still don't know why they are there. I could only get through half of the book.
OMG THIS BOOK WAS SOOOOOOOO AMAZING! and I'm not just saying that because she's a "famous booktuber", I'm actually pretty sure the only reason people give this bad reviews because she is a booktuber! I think this book was so interesting and gripping!!! I would absolutely love to have/own a physical copy in my hands!!!!! and I can't WAIT for the other books like I NEED THEM NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YIKES. This book was better than I thought it was going to be. With that being said, it still wasn't by any means good. I enjoy Sasha's videos and I admire her for publishing a book in such a short amount of time, but there's no doubt that this first installment could use some major editing. The writing was repetitive and almost all of the dialogue was forced and cartoonish. I didn't find any of the characters to be particularly interesting and it was because of this that I couldn't differentiate between them- all of them seemed to have a mysterious and dark past that I honestly couldn't care less about. All in all, I found Zenith to be just like any other poorly-written YA science-fiction novel and I don't know that I have an interest in reading the rest of it.
