This gave me chills. Once I was invested I whizzed through the story, whisked up by the relentless challenge to overcome the vampiric.

The group use their women's work skills to fight, but this was a bit cliché for me - and you could play content warning bingo with it.

Like having your teeth pulled out by barbed wire, but they're really polite about it. There is a very scary vampire, but, you know how all good horror is about the unnatural threat AND the real ones? There's more dread in a cocktail party with friendly acquaintances than in most of the scenes with, you know, vampirism. The book juggles its time and place, both as a setting dripping with dread and with a comfortable, sympathetic gentleness that never actually lets anybody off the hook (though Mrs. Green is really much too forgiving in the last act). Does a really interesting job with being horribly physical about the most mundane and most otherworldly manifestations of gore alike.

I have to review this book now (right after I've finished) so I don't let the book get to me too much. Listen. I liked most of the book. The beginning of the book. But also!!!! This book has made me remember that I should probably check trigger warnings because I read stuff I don't know that much about!!!!!!!!! Hahahahaha that sure was fun to read last night when I wanted to read and unwind a little. That was. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Anyways I am so tired of
rape being used to demean women. I guess it's how vampires spread their vampire-ness but I am tired. It was so unnecessary and it took me right out of the book. Also, I absolutely hate seeing rape in media. This is a me problem but still
. I think books about women that are written by men should always be looked at a little more critically but sigh. I don't know. I'm very tired. The vampire was not even fun in this book. He just sucked. Also I totally got gaslit by him and that wasn't fun. Also, the
husbands becoming evil and not caring for their wives at all after James Harris was just. Cool. Would have been nice if we still cared about them a little bit!!! Whatever!!!

for the first few chapters i almost forgot this was a horror novel because i was so invested in these housewives’ drama. but then things got dark FAST. i don’t think i’ve ever been angrier at a fictional character than i was at the husbands in this book. if i could have skinned them all alive i would have. i HIGHLY recommend the audiobook.
side note: it is so nice reading a book set in south carolina????? like, i know the towns they’re talking about! they shop at bi-lo!!! the bit about the whole town being busy watching the clemson v. carolina game!!!!! is this what people who live in states that are more frequently featured in fiction feel like all the time???

Definitely check out the content warnings for this one!

While I don't think some of the elements (you know which ones) were necessary and hate when they are written for shock value, it was ultimately a very entertaining read. A page turner that kept me enthralled enough to forget my actual real life problems, which is just what I needed. The characters made the difference because they felt three dimensional and well written. I loved Kitty and Mrs Greene and I think Patricia is a good and complex main character.

This book was surprising good and woke for a white man. The title is very misleading. The book focuses a lot more of race, class, and gender than vampire slaying. It makes you hate men even more than you probably already do. And it brings to light the difference between black women and white women in the feminist movement. The feminist movement should include all women but white women put black women down and ignore WOC ‘s pain. This book is a wonderful piece of social commentary. If vampires don’t entice you then read it for that.

Ps gaslighting is 90 percent of the book.

Pps After finishing this book, I hate to throw up and cry. But in a good way? I feel very emotionally raw.
