I passi dell'amore

Nicholas Sparks

I. Hate. Nicholas. Sparks. Except I don't. This man has MASTERED the ability to shatter your heart. His writing is beyond incredible, the way he pulls together a story is beautiful, and the way he writes his characters with such depth is truly amazing.

Now, I haven't read a book by Nicholas Sparks since I was in high school, and neither of those really made me cry, but THIS BOOK? Oh, this book made me cry harder than any book I have EVER read. I have seen this movie approximately 100 times (and cried every time) but for some reason never got around to reading the book. But, I can say without a doubt that the movie could never top the pain that this book put me through. The first 125 pages brought me so much joy and I grew to love these characters more than the movie ever did. I loved watching Landon's outer shell break and watching Jamie bring out the best in him was beautiful to read. And then, the last 34 pages made me cry. No, not just cry, SOB. There are tear stains all over those pages and the worst part is I can't even explain what broke me so much. I think the pacing really gets to you. There was so much time, pain, suffering, sadness, heart-break and beautiful moments packed into the last 34 pages and it HURT. But, I think my favorite thing about this book is that it really leaves the ending up to the readers interpretation and I think how you see the end says a lot about who you are and how you see life. And the conclusion I drew made me realize two things, 1. Miracles exist, even if it isn't the miracle you envisioned happening and 2. The journey to reach that miracle is always worth it. Always.

This is a long review for a book that is 159 pages long, but this will forever be a book I hold dearly and since it made me cry so much more than any other book I thought it deserved a good review. I will forever have mixed feelings about Nicholas Sparks after reading this book, absolute admiration for his insanely beautiful way with words, and absolute hatred for how much pain he put me through. (But Mr. Sparks, if you see this, just know I could never actually hate you.)

The movie is one of my favorites, so it was time for me to read the book—which is also my first Nicholas Sparks read. It’s interesting to see the changes made through the adaption process, while still keeping the essence of the original story. Landon and Jamie have my heart. They’re so pure and sweet and soft, even through such sorrow—C’mon…With that combination, it’s a classic enneagram 4 book. It’ll have your heart melting and weeping; what more could you ask for??

4.5 rounded up.

A nice sappy love story, perfect to read when you’re home sick and can’t totally focus.
fast-paced

Still cried at the end, but much worse than I remember. The ending was so rushed oh my gosh

A rare occasion in which I thought the movie was better. The book was a little too religious for my taste.

The movie and book are drastically different. I saw the movie first and was very surprised by the book.
