I don't know, maybe I'm not nuanced enough for this book. The style was overly abrupt and grated on me. I pegged the murderer right from the get -- though not the motive, to be fair -- and the end was too expository.

I found the mystery at the heart of the book a little lacking. I did not guess the full truth so it was good in that regard, but it didn't excite me very much. I also don't understand why the friend on the mainland didn't just go check on them, but maybe I didn't catch the explanation.
