Really a 3.9. Nothing really wrong with it. I enjoyed it. The twist did get me. But I wasn't blown away(5 star) or truly satisfied with the story (4). That might be a function of the age of the book but I understand why it was so popular

This fun and fiendishly plotted homage to golden age crime casts an adoring eye on old time mysteries. Delightful and surprising. (Lots of gristle, so not for the faint of heart.)

As the introduction stated, this was a somewhat dry novel with clichéd characters. However, as also prompted by the introduction to see it as a puzzle, I actually figured a fraction of the solution to the mystery before it was explained. I'm not usually someone who treats mystery novels like solvable games, but this felt like it had some clever ideas and tricks to back up its famous reputation. Some of the writing felt a little redundant and circular, but I'm not sure if that was the author's writing style originally or the translation.

Such a fun puzzle of a mystery. Riddled with details, the story has so much to focus on and a lot of great twists. I had a great time reading this.
