And Then There Were None but make it Japanese and way better. Highly recommend.

A fun page-turner that kept me guessing and also creeped me out while reading alone in my empty apartment.

The locked door premise was intriguing, but it just didn't work for me. The author seems to have wanted to create a structure for a locked door crime, then inserted characters who were indistinguishable from each other. They had no personalities and talked in a stilted, unrealistic manner--it also means I did not care at all who did it or why. There is an information dump that tells you how things happened, but I found it impossible to believe they could have happened without anyone noticing a lot more.

I really enjoyed this one, from the pacing to the atmosphere to the characters. I was worried that this was going to hew too closely to the And Then There Were None formula, but was delighted that it simultaneously did and did not. It's great when in hindsight you can see the clues you noticed and the ones you did not. The great shame was finding out that this book is part of a series with ten others...only one of which has been translated, though a second one is coming out in May.

What a great mystery. It is a locked room mystery that has lots of little nods to Agatha Christie and her milieu. The writing is a bit stilted--I am not sure if that is the author or the translator--but it doesn't detract too much from the mystery and the story.
I love a locked room mystery (in this case, a house on an island) and this one is well done. Recommend for anyone who likes a good murder mystery sans graphic violence and zero (or next to zero) procedural stuff.
