I made the mistake of finishing this at 3am, and I was too scared to fall asleep afterwards. The intrigue and tension is insanely high, and it's what I have been longing for in a novel for a long time now. Rating it a 5 on Goodreads, but it's really more of a strong 4. The flat characters is the only thing that pulls it down from a 5. Otherwise, chef's kiss.

ehhhh :( idk if it's just the translation but the dialogue is super stilted and jarring and the things the characters decide to do are at times completely illogical – also, not its fault but the story is too thriller-y for me to enjoy i was just scared the whole time

Loved this book. I'm actually not a huge fan of Agatha Christie, so I was pleasantly surprised by this. Even though it is heavily inspired by And Then There Were None, I thought this was much better overall.

A clever Japanese mystery inspired by Agatha Christie's 'And Then There Were None.' The characters were slightly pretentious uni students in a mystery club, and their author-inspired nicknames confused me at first. Once I got into it, I thought the writing and twists were quite clever, especially with the chapters switching off between the mainland investigation and the incidents on the island. I found Shimada - a random stranger (and monk?) - investigating the case a bit weird and thought for most of the story that he had done it, but the reveal that
Morisu did it in revenge for the alcohol poisoning death of Chiori/his girlfriend by the club members
was poignant.
