The whole thing was extremely sluggish and the plot incredibly stagnant. Will not be continuing the series

I REALLY wanted to like this book, but I gave up at 63% when I just couldn’t care about the plot or characters.

A fascinating introduction to a new, darkly intriguing magical world. El is one of the most interesting leads I've read in a while, and her prickly exterior combined with her strong will and dedication to her friends is so well-written. Novik's worldbuilding is captivating, if dense at moments, but overall excellently
done.

I have mixed thoughts on this one for a variety of reasons. But I think one of my biggest problems was that I just do not like Novik’s writing style. I probably would have DNF if I didn’t skim over Novik’s lengthier explanations of the same world/magic building things over and over and over. I wasn’t going to read the following books in the series, but I’m still intrigued by El’s powers and how her story will progress.
