This is such an excellent window into the mind of a young person on its own, but the situation surrounding it makes it even stronger as a historical account.
Sure, there are random childish tirades throughout, but would it be genuine without them? I think what impressed me most was how thoughtful Anne is, which, unfortunately, was probably brought on in part by her difficult circumstances. The way that she discusses herself and the world around her can be shockingly mature and philosophical in tone. She spoke of her sorrow at the evil in the world, the petty arguments inevitable from all people regardless of circumstance, and her hope and joy despite it all.
I have no doubt that if she had lived she would’ve gone on to be a fantastic writer.
What a beautiful soul—I am deeply sad.

“It’s difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.”

Anne was a bisexual icon. Not super fun to read, but very important as an historical document. I recommend the 2016 movie adaptation.
