Watching Anne go from depressed and isolated to hopeful and independent only for it all to end in an incredibly tragic way devasted me. Anne showed great talent for writing especially the pages where she expresses her emotions and mental state.
I think it goes without saying that "The Diary of a Young Girl" was going to be an emotional read. However, I don't think I really anticipated how it would reflect the intimate feelings of a teenage girl, even in the extreme circumstances Anne was forced to live under. Of course, as a diary, one can expect more private and personal details to be shared, but I think there's a tendency to see Anne solely through a tragic perspective when her diaries clearly show she was far more than her circumstances. It was fascinating to read these accounts where she describes what life was like within the Annex. As devastated as I felt by the end of the book, I believe everyone should read it as it is so important.

I first read this book for school in around 8th grade, a time I was both too consumed with my own personal problems and too immature to really grasp its relatability and importance. A little over a decade later and I decided to revisit it and I'm incredibly glad I did. As someone who has been journaling on and off and writing short stories for as long as I can remember I saw so much of my life and experiences reflected through Anne's diary entries, her internal problems, her striving to assert her individuality, and the feelings and thoughts she felt incapable of sharing with anyone other than her diary, Kitty. Anne Frank was clearly a very intelligent and deep feeling human being and I am so thankful her father, Otto Frank, published this incredibly human work after the war. The ending is abrupt, the secret annex had been hopeful for their chances of surviving the war given the Allie's victories and retaking of territories. And yet, everyone in hiding except for Otto Frank died just before they could see liberation. The horrors of World War 2 are well known to anyone who has dedicated time to studying its history but seeing the way it was experienced by this specific teenage girl adds an important level of personalized and subjective understanding. An incredible text and very much worth (re)reading.
