This book details the plot to kill the Medici that resulted in the death of one intended target. Martines does a good job of giving background to the story and providing the reader with nice character sketches. At times the prose is a little dry, but, hey that happens.

What I found interesting was the role of women in the history, they lack power but have power.

Super informative. Not academic in its coordination with the sources, but acceptable.  It shines in the depth with which the author addresses the fullest scope context that is possible and reasonable.

Three and a half stars. It was moderately dense, but still enjoyable and very informative. I had trouble keeping track of everyone the book covers, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Overall, I don't regret spending money for a copy of my own and would recommend April Blood to both history and government buffs.

Really a history book, written primarily in dry, textbook style about the years surrounding the attempted assassination of the Medici family. I enjoyed the 50 pages in the middle that addressed the plot, and there were some interesting details sprinkled in after that.

I read this for a Renaissance history class and ended up writing a paper that argued Lorenzo de Medici engineered the assassination of his own brother. All of the bits of evidence are there, though trying to find the smoking gun academically would be nearly impossible. This is a fascinating read by a terrific Renaissance scholar very knowledgeable in his subject.
