I loved this story about terrible monsters and grumpy unicorns (and the political intrigue, the societal criticism, the fight of god Vs. Evil, etc - but still mostly the little unicorn 😂)

After hundreds of books, thousand hours and years, Riyria remains as darling of my heart. As much as books go, there is absolutely nothing more fun and intimate and familiar than being with Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater. They could be hanging around, having their usual argument, and I will feel completely at home.
The Disappearance of Winter’s Daughter with it simple idea of a story, but woven with such details and heartfelt presence, is a magic of the best kind.

The Disappearance of Winter’s Daughter is the fourth book in the Riyria Chronicles and follows Royce and Hadrian as they investigate the disappearance of a duchess. Hired by the missing duchess’ wealthy but shady father to avenge her, the duo travel to Rochelle to investigate. But something isn’t quite right in the historical city of Rochelle, and Riyria find themselves in a powder keg ripe to explode.
This is another true standalone Riyria story and probably the most different so far. Royce and Hadrian act more like investigators here rather than thieves (or assassins), and they fall into a very political plot involving the plight of mirs (human-elf hybrids). There isn’t as much of the usual action set pieces and has more mystery and moral discussions.
Of course, the best part of the book is still the interactions between Royce and Hadrian. It was extra funny this time around as Royce still cannot accept just how inexplicably bright and naive Hadrian is despite the darkness in the world they live in. He begrudgingly discovers that he has been developing feelings for both Gwen and Hadrian and that he is no longer the lone wolf he thinks himself to be. Aghast!
The Disappearance of Winter’s Daughter is the funniest and most different Riyria story so far.
