This is the best book I've read in a long time. I've spent my whole life in Florida dealing with hurricanes and a lot of my childhood took place in a small coastal town like Rudder. The descriptions of the scenery and the way it feels as a hurricane is moving in were written so beautifully and so accurately that I could practically feel it and smell it while I was reading, it gave me such a sense of familiarity with the environment that Wanda spends her childhood in. I was really surprised when I discovered that the author isn't a Floridian because she really nailed it. Wanda's world is very realistic but I loved the tiny touches of magic sprinkled in. This whole book was beautiful and stressful and devastating and terrifying. I normally like to read in bed before I fall asleep but I accidentally stayed up way too late a couple times because I couldn't stop reading! I highly recommend this, especially if you're a Floridian or you like a realistic dystopian landscape.

In the not too distant future, Wanda is born on the day of the worst hurricane to hit Florida - Hurricane Wanda. Her name marks her as something "other" and she becomes an independent child learning from the adults in her life and the ever changing environment. The Light Pirate is the story of Wanda's whole life.
This is an ominous work of climate fiction, and I really enjoyed it. Lily Brooks-Dalton is a new author to me, and I look forward to reading more of her books.

It was well written and pulls you in super quick, but the content made me feel super anxious - totally a personal preference.
