I liked this a lot- it was suspenseful, interesting, and devastating at times. I wanted more from it actually- some of the plot lines were under-explored and left unresolved. I was hoping there might be a sequel in the works but likely no. The ending felt a bit rushed through to me and I didn’t understand the addition of Wanda and bird dog’s romantic relationship. But would solidly recommend it to anyone into climate/speculative fiction.

Beautiful prose of an experience I hope to never have.

This book was a 3.5 rounded up to a 4. I looooved the beginning of the book. Dalton-Brooks's writing style is terrific and really ratcheted up the tension. The discussion on climate change and the worsening of conditions for the whole country--and probably world--were fascinating. And my heart ached for that little girl.

I kind of... didn't like the ending. It really seemed to come out of nowhere and it seemed completely antithetical to the Wanda we had grown to know in the middle of the book. So that was kinda strange. And as far as Wanda's ability, I didn't really ever feel satisfied with it.

Oh well! I couldn't put the book down for a good chunk of it, so I guess I'll take it!

This novel has a horrific and catastrophic beginning, very unpleasant to read, but once you get past that, the rest of the book becomes increasingly captivating as it describes through lives lived, what happens to Florida in the decades to come, as climate change renders it mostly uninhabitable, or at least incapable of sustaining the trappings of modern civilization. I suppose this technically makes it a form of science fiction, but it certainly doesn't read like it. It's more of a gradual return to a primitive way of life. Quite compelling.

Really loved this story and the message behind it. I really enjoyed the relationships between most of the characters. Why it doesn’t have 5 stars is because of the “magical” element that seems a little out of place
