Beautifully written novel of a dystopian future as climate change takes over Florida and the world. The central character that we witness this through is born during a hurricane that devastates her family. Wandas story is compelling, tragic yet not maudlin in any way. We had best pay attention.

Wow! Lyrical and gorgeous writing for a very difficult subject!!

I really loved it and I found it hopeful in a way that I don't often experience. It really stuck with me, the sense of realism of the breakdown of human systems. I found the characters fairly compelling tho actually I was least connected to Wanda. I liked the jumping around in time and the whole first part, woof, what a gut punch and also what a page turner (or if you're me on audiobook a run extra errands so you can keep listening book)

I loved the bonus queer love story at the end. I loved the character of Phyllis. I sort of felt I could do without the magic element but I know it was important so idk.

“The elderly die, and the old ways die with them. The young are born, and fresh traditions begin.”

The Light Pirate is an amazing read discussing climate change with end-of-the-world vibes and intertwined with some magical realism. Loved almost everything about this book — the portrayal of loss and found family, the sibling dynamics, and the imminent threat of our negative actions towards the environment that urges us to act to avoid this possible outcome.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

The description doesn't do justice to the poetic nature and rhythm of this story. It could be four novels, but instead just one woven together beautifully

I absolutely devoured this book. The frantic pacing of the first section mirrored the dread and devastation of the first hurricane the young protagonist is named for. This book was a lovely exploration of the simultaneous tenderness and ruthlessness of both humanity and nature, with just a hint of magical realism.

The characters were well thought out and reflected the diversity of real communities: A stubborn but tender blue collar dad, the jerk around town who never grew out of being a middle school bully, an old flame from youth that moves away, the neighbor we never really got to know who was always kind, the scientist and educator we all learned our best lessons from, and the landscape they all live in which has its own unique anthropomorphized personality.

Perfect for those looking to get into science-fiction because it shows what our world could become. I think it also shows the importance of accepting change.

This book is haunting in a sad but beautiful way. The loss, the will to survive, coping when everything you knew is lost. Loved this book.

I wasn't prepared for how realistic it would be-not really science fiction to me. Dystopia due to climate change. Really could happen-depressing. Found the whole book depressing. Very good reader on audiobook
