One of my favorite books I’ve read in awhile. Beautiful and terrible and glorious all at once. Well drawn characters. She captures the feeling of an approaching storm as only one who has experienced that could. Enjoy.

I wish the vision were more expansive. It really focuses on two able bodied smart women. It’s beautiful and hopeful but it makes me wonder how the author could have imagined how people of different abilities could live. Is the future only for the strong and observant?

This was a mesmerizing story of grief, destruction, and hope, as told through 4 elements that ground our world - power, water, light, and time. The story of destruction and nature’s reclaiming was uncomfortable, but also with a lining of resilience and hopeful imagining of what could happen next. I’m still processing my feelings about it…

4.5 stars. Deeply intimate yet zoomed out dystopian novel. A powerful way to tell a story about the difficult topic of climate change and humans as a species. Will think about this book often.

4.5

Devastating and beautiful at the same time. Even with the dystopian future in the background (where climate change is truly one of the main characters), this novel has warmth, beauty, and growth/development. The main characters are fully fleshed out. I loved that you get an intimate look at Wanda’s thoughts and choices throughout while getting to know her loved ones as well. It made me hang on to every word while the story unfolded. I really enjoyed this read and was honestly a bit sad to finish it.

The plot is a great concept, but also a frightening concept that has every possibility of happening. I loved most of the characters. I felt the end was a bit flat though. I wanted the light to mean something...but that's life--meaningless.

Such unique story telling. So moving and also terrifying at the same time. I LOVED this book.
