Paradise Lost is that bitch, but it is that bitch that I'm honestly tired of rereading...

Beautiful, emotional, and epic. I needed to read each chapter at least twice, sometimes a third time (or listen to it on librivox) to really absorb properly. I loved the depth and struggle of Lucifer’s character. Was far less interested in Adam and Eve. Raised some interesting discussions about free-will though.

Favourite excerpts and thoughts:

Upon himself; horror and doubt distracts
His troubl'd thoughts, and from the bottom stir
The Hell within him, for within him Hell
He brings, and round about him, nor from Hell
One step no more than from himself can fly
By change of place: Now conscience wakes despair
That slumber'd, wakes the bitter memory
Of what he was, what is, and what must be
Worse; of worse deeds worse sufferings must ensue.

(His self-loathing and self-punishment are one of the most interesting points of his character)

But say I could repent and could obtain
By Act of Grace my former state; how soon
Would heighth recall high thoughts, how soon unsay
What feign'd submission swore: ease would recant
Vows made in pain, as violent and void.
For never can true reconcilement grow
Where wounds of deadly hate have pierc'd so deep:
Which would but lead me to a worse relapse,
And heavier fall: so should I purchase dear
Short intermission bought with double smart.
This knows my punisher; therefore as far
From granting hee, as I from begging peace:
All hope excluded thus, behold instead
Of us out-cast, exil'd, his new delight,
Mankind created, and for him this World.
So farewell Hope, and with Hope farewell Fear,
Farewell Remorse: all Good to me is lost;

(This is so heartbreaking. While I believe it’s likely Milton used this as a reasoning as to why God can be considered merciful and forgiving and yet does not forgive one of his fallen creations, it is equally possible this is something Satan has internalized; a self-fulfilling prophecy. We will never know of it was possible for Satan to repent and be forgiven because he is convinced he can’t and so doesn’t try)

"O Hell! what do mine eyes with grief behold,
Into our room of bliss thus high advanc't
Creatures of other mould, earth-born perhaps,
Not Spirits, yet to heav'nly Spirits bright
Little inferior; whom my thoughts pursue
With wonder, and could love, so lively shines
In them Divine resemblance, and such grace
The hand that form'd them on their shape hath pour'd.
Ah gentle pair, yee little think how nigh
Your change approaches, when all these delights
Will vanish and deliver ye to woe,

Thank him who puts me loath to this revenge
On you who wrong me not for him who wrong'd.
And should I at your harmless innocence
Melt, as I do, yet public reason just,
Honour and Empire with revenge enlarg'd,
By conquering this new World, compels me now
To do what else though damn'd I should abhor."

(I love this bit, showing Satan struggling with his compassion. He has to convince himself it’s necessary for revenge, but it doesn’t seem to be desire for revenge driving him, rather the believe that he must seek revenge and this is the way to do it. He’s so conflicted but doesn’t see an alternative, which is again heartbreaking as there *is* an alternative)

The first two books are crazy fucking good (the rest is good too but oh my god man)

fucking killed me this was painful just read the bible

Will try again- had to return to library. Hard to find time to really invest in poetry.
