The prose is majestic and the story is imaginative, but what I appreciate most is that - contrary to my expectations - Milton isn't just writing Bible fan-fiction. He certainly does fantasize details around the first three chapters of Genesis (not all of which are theologically sound), but taken as a whole, the purpose of "Paradise Lost" seems to be to use those three chapters as a starting point from which to summarize the connecting plot of the entire Bible. That's an admirable goal even if the cultural and linguistic distance from Milton's day to now makes the poem tough for modern readers to get through.

Bought this version specifically for Pullman's foreword and was not disappointed in the slightest.

I've read this book twice: once for school and once for work. Don't read this book. Whoever tells you that you should read this is not your friend and only wants to hurt you. This is somehow more boring than the Bible, and more preachy. Fuck this book.

Reading this along with Anthony Oliveira's podcast on a weekly basis was fantastic.
