Okay okay so this is a reread! I first read this when I was in middle school and it was like my favorite thing ever. Now upon rereading it’s definitely…interesting? I definitely don’t think it’s the best thing but, my nostalgia for it is so strong that I can’t dislike this manga but I can definitely see that it is problematic. For instance, the characters often harass Alice- she will establish boundaries with the side characters and they will continue to do what she asked not to. I would say the two characters most guilty of this would be 1. Boris (  he is the main love interest so it kind of makes sense? But it’s still not okay) 2. Mad hatter, no bc he’s actually creepy. Like this man needs to be locked up 💀 anywaysss, I am surprised I was reading this at 12-

WELL. that was one hecked up pairing. just hecked the heck up.
Spoilerlike it started on shaky ground to begin with but when they were making out and ace started strangling her? and alice just lay back like yeah alright, you do your murder thing bb, this is what love does to a girl apparently

ace/alice: some truly hecked up ish

i picked this up because i wanted to see where they were going with ace's whole 'rebel against assigned roles!' thing but alas, somehow quinrose managed to do an entire ace-centric volume without actually elaborating on his conflict any beyond what we got in alice in the country of hearts

maybe it's because this is only half a volume since literally the entire back half was a preview for some manga called crimson empire which like: ???? honestly i didn't even bother reading it because i was annoyed to see the space wasted when this volume failed so badly at delivering any real story

This manga certainly isn't the greatest one I've read, but the series holds a very special place in my heart due to my initial reading when I was a child.

After reading several of the Country of Clover stories, my overall opinion is a solid "meh". I was excited for Ace's story because, come on, he's an interesting guy. However, I don't feel like I know anything more about him. Also, his relationship with Alice seems implausible. There was no real explanation as to how one of the most indifferent characters in the story suddenly decided he loved Alice, nor how Alice just as quickly came to love someone so psychotic. The plot just felt messy and didn't leave me with anything very memorable. Overall, the sub stories haven't been terrible, but they're definitely a disappointment in comparison to Country of Hearts.

It was an interesting manga, but I don't think I'll be continuing. It had one too many "pervy" moments in it for me to keep enjoying it. I did love the Cheshire Cat, though. Boris was a great character.
