The book reportedly took Jennings 10 years to write and it is absolutely crammed with information about the Aztec civilisation, so much so that I found myself in very familiar territory when I visit an exhibition on the Aztecs at the Royal Academy in London some years ago.
Other than that, it is an enjoyable historical Bildungsroman, giving an overview of a culture as it collapses.
