The book is exceptionally well written and I completely understand why this was such a huge hit at the time and why it’s still popular today. Very impressive for its time!
That said, I can’t say I really enjoyed it. It fully earns its 5 star rating but it’s based on its own merits rather than how much enjoyment it brought me if that makes any sense. I don’t know how many other books I’ve ever had that with but it wasn’t many.

Quelle épopée que celle de d'Artagnan et des trois mousquetaires! J'ai beaucoup apprécié découvrir les aventures de ces 4 amis. Ma première impression, à laquelle je ne m'attendais pas, était que ce livre est drôle, plein de situations absurdes et d'ironie. Mais il est également plein de péripéties qui tiennent le lecteur en haleine malgré les 800 pages, et contient aussi un peu de drame. La recette parfaite pour un roman qu'on ne peut lâcher.
J'ai beaucoup aimé les quatre personnages principaux ainsi que leur relation d'amitié (surtout celle de d'Artagnan et Athos). Plusieurs critiques relèvent le fait qu'ils sont en quelque sorte des bandits, et c'est vrai qu'ils tuent beaucoup de gens, sont orgueilleux, calculateurs et qu'ils ont une manière assez étrange de traiter leurs laquais... mais cela ne m'a personnellement pas empêchée de m'attacher à eux : il ne faut pas oublier que ce sont des hommes du 17e siècle, et le fait qu'ils soient imparfaits les rend aussi un peu plus humains et réels.
Ce qui m'a par contre plus dérangée, et qui m'empêche de donner 5 étoiles à ce livre, c'est le traitement du personnage de Milady. On a ici le topos de la femme fatale qui "perd" tous les hommes qu'elle rencontre, et la faute et toujours entièrement mise sur elle, mais jamais sur les hommes qui succombent à ses charmes. Je n'ai pas été convaincue du fait qu'elle était réellement cruelle et méchante, du moins dans les premiers crimes qui lui sont reprochés. Et si elle était réellement tombée amoureuse de ce prêtre? Qui nous dit qu'elle était par choix dans ce couvent? Bref, pas assez de réponses qui permettent de me faire penser qu'elle est vraiment "diabolique", et j'y vois plutôt une forme de misogynie envers cette femme qui court après la liberté. J'ai également de la peine à comprendre la réaction des hommes face à la fleur de lys qu'elle porte sur l'épaule : pourquoi vouloir à tout prix la tuer sans même connaître son histoire? N'y a-t-il aucune repentance possible?
Bref, malgré ce malheureux bémol je conseille quand même largement la lecture de ce roman, qui m'a surprise en bien.

The Three Musketeers is full of adventure and swagger, and it’s quite funny, but it’s also tragic. Love, honor, and death form the lives of our heroes.
The Musketeers and their newfound friend who joins the King’s Guard are fondly delineated - Dumas clearly loved Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D’Artagnan. Their word is their bond - they truly believe in death before dishonor. They will always fight for one another.
As expected, the callow D’Artagnan goes through the change from unsophisticated rube to gallant Musketeer. The growth that is more illuminating, though, is that Athos goes from a self-destructive drunk to a man with a firm hold on his future. Instead of spending his time and money in foolish pursuits he matures to have a more serious outlook. The scene of him locked in a wine cellar for a week, drinking everything within, is really funny but the Athos at the end of the book wouldn’t behave as irresponsibly.

I couldn't help but completely detach myself from these 4 figures in the early chapters and was impossible to relate to them for the rest of the book.
Only Aramis kept the values of ethos and justice but alas he was alone on that company.
