Seeing how highly rated this book is makes me feel like I’m majorly missing something. I went into this read thoroughly believing I would love it, but that was not the case. The age gap is questionable, and one could make excuses for it if not for the fact that Oliver outright refers to Elio as a child early on in the book. Of course the infamous peach scene is mentioned in many reviews, but my biggest “wtf” moment came during the bathroom scene. What was that??

There were other things I found issue with, like the brazen mentions of rape and assault, as well as the poet’s weird monologue about his stint in Thailand. Even with it being published back in 2008, I found some of the content to be in poor taste. Especially the bathroom. There is not a single time period during which this could’ve been written and I would’ve thought “yeah, that’s a normal thing to do.”

Beautifully written. The fine line between love and obsession was so well described.

To be honest I’m not okay. For me it was one of those books I just don’t want to have finished. The way it was written was beautiful and at first I was sceptical about the ending with the party and such but it was amazing and I loved it in the end.

André Aciman, the man that you are.
