This book is too cute!
I picked it up as part of the Kiss Kiss 12 book collection and was in the mood for a fun lighthearted read, this book definitely ticked all the boxes.
JJ is a really cool character and i loved just dipping in and out of defining moments in her life until we got closer to present day. Danny and Phillip are the coolest friends, they sound like the kind of friends I would have loved to have been best friends with when i was younger, i have to say i was a bit jealous of her.
I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series and more of Jillian Dodd.

This book was a lot of back story into these people's lives to just have the end lead into book number 2. I'll probably read the second, and we'll see about the third. Mostly because I'm nosey and I already put this much time into learning about the characters. It was an easy & fast read for me but maybe it was because I finished a book I very much disliked before reading this one.
TLDR: I didn't love this book but I didn't hate it. It counts as a book I've read this year, so that works for me.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed it but to me it reads for like a young teen although the content may not be for one. Also, wish I would have known about the trigger of parent loss before I was bawling my eyes out on the elliptical. Too soon to read that after my daddy passing in October.
That Boy follows JJ (Jadyn) and her two best friends--Phillip and Danny--from youth to college. Told from JJ's perspective, it is a novel about growth and friendship. JJ, Phillip, and Danny navigate how friendships can develop and change and how feelings and attractions can complicate it.
Overall, this was a quick and fun read. The way Dodd wrote JJ's "voice" was really difficult to muddle through sometimes. She just seemed so naive and immature through the entire novel... not just during the middle school years. It was frustrating, and I actually found myself disliking JJ because of it. However, this is the kind of plot that gets me--boy next door and all that. So it still earned a "liked it" because of that. Granted, I picked this up as an Amazon freebie which helps ease the pain of the writing style. The next two books are not free (nor are they low enough price to consider purchasing) so I won't be reading further on into JJ's life.
I would recommend to those looking for a really quick, cutesy read about friends and budding romance.

OMG *meltiiiiing* this book has a perfect opening and ending! Its so damn sweet (۳˚Д˚)۳
At first i didnt really interesting in this book, look at the cover! That's just plain simple, but when i learn that the book is kind of diary and doodles, everything makes senses. Did i mention you this book is full colour? Yes! This book has a lot of doodles in every chapters, and that's make it so cute ;)y
The story is about JJ and her bestfriend (that has been friends forever, well since birth) phillip lives across the street from her, their parents are really close friends and they hope that their kids will get married. And that time JJ just laugh because she don't want to marry Phillip cause she only want to marry a prince, but guess what?
Phillip is the best friend she ever had, she didnt really like her Girls friends much. Phillip in the other hand, sometimes acted like a prince to her and she told him that and ever since, he calls her Princess. *aaaaaaaaaaw
On her 5th Grade, a new family moved into their neighborhood near JJ's and Philip's house. And the family have a son, his name is Danny, a year older than them. JJ hates Danny so much, she thinks Danny has ruined her life because he stole Phillip and abandoned JJ. Well Danny is kinda cute and got really popular at school, JJ knew it, but when she got to know him she knew that she gonna hate him because Danny think he is to cool to plays with a girl. After some cursed and cried and an adivised from her father, he came to Danny and gave him a lesson, she punched him! Lol
And since then, Danny knowledged her and the three of them become best friends.
When they grown up, Danny still plays football and Phillip still smart and calm as always.
And yesss, they still best friends, dispise that they have their own Girls Friends and boyfriend.
And you know what? I feel so jealous at their friendship T_T when i was a kid there was not many houses yet near my house so i don't have a lot of friends at my age, well except school where i have a tons of friends but they lived so far away from me so i just living my chilhood with TV and Comics as my bestfriends. So i feel jealous at JJ,,, anyway i don't regret my life haha.
Soooo basically, according the Sinopsys this book is about a love triangle. But i guess its not really typical love triangle :/
I expect Phillip and Danny would kill each other for JJ, but Nooooo its not like that at all. They value their friendship so much, they won't ruin it with their romances T3T
But yes, the two boys have feelings more than a friend with JJ. One boy just realized it, and The other one has been in love with her since kids.
So i guss this book is more to frendship than love story (but the love lines are so damn cool too!) And i hate it, because i jealous at them. Haha
I'm kinda hope that the story will focus only when they were kids, like Junior high school or when they just moved at High school but no, the story still keep on moving till they graduated from the same university. To attracted the older readers perhaps? Anyway, its makes sense because the story ended with they engagement and if the story ended when they still Kids, we will never saw the Amazing and incredible Engagement's suprised!
I told you! The opening and ending of this story are so cool! Mind blowing hahaha
And the best part of the ending is, the flashback of their chilhood that's so touching! *teary eyes* and oh, the book is kinda funny too especially when JJ on the way to her date with "insert that boy name" and she thinks she gonna be killed by the limo's driver! Haha.
Which one you like the best? Danny the most handsome boy at school, cheerful and cool or Phillip the calm and kind-hearted and has the coolest smile ever? Well, if you are me you'll know which one i like the best. Sureeeeee
And oh, its has a sequel! I guess i'll check it later ^w^
And by the way, the story got kinda boring at the middle of it but dang, the ending is just coool.

*3.5
Honestly...I didn't feel anything for this book. There wasn't anything exciting to keep me on the edge of my seat. Sure, the romance was cute. But that was really it. The whole book was revolved around the main character's romantic endeavor.
I didn't care for JJ. I know that might sound harsh but it frustrated me how One good thing about JJ, though, is that I really saw her grow up. This book takes place in the span of many years. From her freshman year in high school to after she graduated from college. And I could see her mature through the words.
The relationship was cute But other than that, there wasn't anything to excite me. I am going to pick up the next book in the series, though. I want to know what happens next and they're really fast reads. I hope the following books will be more intersting than this one.

Spoiler
she spent half of the book chasing after guys (or having small flings) when I can clearly see how much Phillip loved her.The relationship was cute
