Took way too long for the disparate parts to intersect. The characters were bland and it was quite cold.

MacLeod at his best

I’ve enjoyed recent MacLeod books, but not in the way I could recommend to most folks - too abstract, too weird in some way or another. This one is MacLeod at his best - complex and with something to say about people and politics, but also comprehensible and engaging in a more human way. Thoroughly enjoyed it and looking forward to the next book.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but I ended up really enjoying it. The concept was super interesting and kind of unique. I like how it focused on how FTL travelling was invented. I also like the three different storylines in the three planets. At first I struggled a bit to understand the world but not long after everything started to make sense. The world building is really cool. I found it interesting how the one power (Union) focused on surviving on earth and developed the ai while the other two (Alliance and States) focused on other planets. You have both scenarios to explore. The fermi as a concept is really unique and do not bear any similarity with other types of alien species in science fiction novels. Can't wait to read the second one!
