Cortito y bien escrito, dan ganas de leer el resto de una serie. Si siempre has soñado con abrir una puerta que te transporte a otro mundo o te has preguntado qué harías si tuvieras que volver, esta novela es para ti.

Now that I finished my reread I need to continue with this series

Reread - I read this series via audiobook the first time and over a long period of time. With the latest book coming out I decided I should reread the series to refresh my memory and rediscover it by physically reading.

Upon reread, I have changed my rating to a 5 star. I think Seanan McGuire created an amazing universe, and it's not perfect but I just love what she created and this first book being an introduction to the series is just so good.

It's an amazing conversation about imagination and growing up, as well as a great magic system and characters.

I'm so excited to reread the entire series.

Peter Pan. Alice in Wonderland. The children of Narnia. These stories are familiar to us by now. A child crawls through a wardrobe or tumbles down a rabbit-hole and finds themselves in a different place, a world of magic and strange rules. This book starts at the end of those stories. What happens to those kids when they return from their journey having been irrevocably changed by it, and cannot forget it? How do you feel and what might you do, when your life on the other side of reality is so much more engaging and empowering than the dreary, "real" life of school and parents and quiet suburbs? Wouldn't you want to go back, if you could? Some kids will adapt, and apply their new knowledge and skills to navigate the world they've returned to. Some get despondent, and retreat inside their own heads. While others... get desperate. I wasn't entirely expecting the murder-mystery that incites the story, but it makes sense to me in retrospect. It feels a little too procedural, sometimes - a murder happens, the protagonists agree to work together to gather clues, more murders happen, the protagonists race against time to solve the mystery before it's their turn - but the empathy that the book builds for its young, half-lost, heroes (and for children in general, I feel) is very satisfying. I'm not in an immediate rush to read the sequels, but I still enjoyed the book.
