What a beautifully melancholic novella! I'll admit I didn't get far the first time that I tried to read it, I guess I had to be in the right mood because this time I plowed through it in one sitting. My only complaint is that it could have been fleshed out a lot more into a full novel.
Seanan McGuire's Every Heart a Doorway isn't your typical happy go lucky fantasy, and it certainly isn't my "go to" genre. It lures you into a world of fantastical realms that people access through hidden doorways, and unlike most people who fall into a different world and want to go back "home", these people want to desperately go back to their other worldly realm. Enter Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children, a refuge for those displaced souls. This book almost felt like an ongoing group therapy session, except, instead of a group hug at the end, someone gets mysteriously murdered.
The characters and premise of the story are what really sucked me in. I wanted to know more about each character's emotional baggage and try to figure out how/why they stumbled upon the realm they did. Though this was a novella, it moved at a very good pace...until the ending.
The ending was a bit abrupt and took me by surprise. The novella had been moving at a steady pace, yet I felt the ending moved very quickly, and I didn't believe in it much. The culprit reveal could have been strengthened with more clues dropped along the way instead added in later.
Still, Every Heart a Doorway is a unique and thought-provoking read. I'd still encourage people to step through McGuire's authorship doorway :)

Fast paced, action packed. All the characters had interesting backgrounds and personalities. Enjoyed their interactions in the attic and lunchroom.
Loved that the main character is asexual…plus there’s a trans character too.
Excited to see how the rest of the series plays out now that Nancy walked through her door

Beautifully written and I can't wait to read more!
3.5 stars. I'll continue the series but I hope it gets better. I loved the mystery that comes later in the story. It'll be interesting to see where they take the story.

Love the concept of this book. Really enjoyed the map/orientation concept of thee different worlds. And I really liked the main character's ideals on stillness and color. Some beautiful writing in here!
