Out of the main four elements we as a society recognize, water is the chameleon (in my opinion) out of all of them. At first glance, you can’t tell how much damage something as free flowing yet still water can be. Tsunamis, floods and other powerful forces that involve water can impact a variety of people. In this case, this debut introduces us to a country that is surrounded by water aka Vietnam. One of our female MC’s is a young mother who has to leave the only home she’s ever known in order to save the lives of her and her two sons. New Orleans becomes their new home. The two brothers grow up with vastly different life paths. One joins a gang and the other realizes he’s gay. We follow this small family within a span of 27 years.
Hu’o’ng, Tua’n and Ben each encompass a point of view and at times we are exposed to how war can deeply impact a person as well as trying to identify with roots you may not be familiar with growing up in the West vs the East.
