Preferred this to the first book! A little more realistic in respect to character development and plot.
Two things... the plot still could have used some more attention.
And this should not have bothered me as much as it did, but it drove me bonkers that, even though everyone’s true identities were revealed halfway through the first book, they were referred to by both their “real” names and their aliases to the end of the second book.. even though their aliases literally had no use anymore. It just seemed like lazy writing

I have been going through Rebecca Ross' back catalogue since devouring the Cadence and Ruthless Vows duologies.  I won't give too many details here for fear of book 2 revealing too many details, but I can say that I found this a remarkable conclusion to the series. I haven't see too many YA series deal with post-rebellion conflict in this measured way and through strong characterization. There were certain elements that were repetitive, where the pacing was odd, and other surprises for  loose ends or other side details that were a bit too neatly resolved. Overall, Ross continues to be a instant read whenever her latest book releases.

I picked up the first novel in this series completely randomly and fell instantly in-love with Brianna and the Kingdom of Valenia! I enjoyed the sequel just as much as the first in the series and Brianna as a heroin!

Rebecca did an amazing job with the world building in this beautiful series and it felt unique within the world of YA fantasy-romance. Highly recommend it for anyone who loves fantasy and romance and is looking for a unique book series that for some mysterious reason isn’t super mainstream❤️

I couldn't wait for my physical copy to arrive, once I finished "The Queen's Rising", so I had to get the Kindle edition as well.

In this second instalments of the series, we get to explore much more of Maevana, understand how the Houses are structured and how the politics of this kingdom really work. Rebecca Ross' world-building continues to be astounding, I have to say!

The characters are fleshed out even better in this novel and I became quite attached to Isolde and Cartier (especially thanks to having his POV alternating with Brienna's, this time). Cartier's own side-plot was very intriguing and made me want to skip ahead a couple of times to find out what happened quicker (I never did, though, I was so good!).

All in all, I enjoyed this book even more than the first and am so glad we got to see more of these characters and world.

(I know I'm a bit behind in reading Ross' work, but have now proceeded to order 3 more of her books... time to catch up!)

I didn't need a second book ... And yet this was an excellent second book.

I loved it.
