This sequel to The Queen's Rising was an enjoyable enough read, but it fell flat for me in comparison to the first book. There was a lot more politics, and even though it was a major driving force for the plot, I found myself thinking it was overdone. There is also alternating chapters this time between Brienna and Cartier. The chapters from Cartier's POV were nice, but I definitely prefer Brienna's chapters. She is my favorite character from these books and I like how the story reads from her perspective. I found myself wishing for more of the character relationships from the first book as well. There was just a lot going on that became separations between everyone. However, the last 100 pages or so were so good! This is one of those books that leads up to a pretty amazing ending.

Like the first book, it took me a while to slip into the story. But once I was there, I was hooked. A fantastic end to Brienna’s story.

AM IUBIT TOT CE TINE DE CARTEA ASTA! Am scăzut din punctaj doar pentru ca pe alocuri erau descrieri inutile, dar în rest, oameni buni, seria asta merita mai multa recunoaștere.
"Oamenii pe care ii iubim reprezinta întotdeauna o slabiciune" give me more! A fost atât de simpatica, personajele au fost atât de perfecte, eroina puternica, personaj masculin de milioane

Read this on a flight. I preferred the first book, because it had a more compelling plot. Overall, the storyline here is interesting, there are just some yawn moments. For example, Cartier being a former Master of Knowledge is shockingly slow to piece things together. Brienna tends to be a bit smarter than those around her, and it can veer into Mary-Sue territory when she is schooling others who have more experience in deception and tactics than her. I also found her romance with Cartier/Aodhane to be not very compelling, because I don't find him to be an overly interesting character.

This has become a favorite duology of mine just from the 2nd book alone. I loved everything about it!
