Once your country overthrows their dictator everything should be fine, right? New government is appointed, everyone is happy, the country is prospering…

Uh, no. In reality everyone is NOT happy, some countries go through a tumultuous period after a coup, cities may need to be rebuilt, and the people ally themselves with different leaders. Confusion – sometimes chaos – ensue. Ross builds a more realistic setting about post-coups in this sequel, which is better than the first book!

Enjoyed the sequel and Brianna as a heroin!

My Rating : 4🌟

Okay.. I was obsessed with the first book. And I had so much expectations for this book. I am not saying it was bad, It was ridiculously good and I still loved the story and the characters, but I was expecting more. I felt the story was slightly boring and dragged in the middle, but it managed to get interesting later! And that ending chapter! 😪😪😪 I almost cried! And they were definitely happy tears!! I love my babies Brienna & Aodhan 💞💞

I was blown away by book 1 on this series, The Queen's Rising, so knew that I would need to get my hands on book 2 as soon as possible, and ordered it as a birthday present to myself. Now that Isolde has been restored to her rightful position as queen, and Brienna is settling into her role as MacQuinn's adopted daughter, and mistress of knowledge, the bunch of characters we know and love might have been expecting that life could get to normal, and their wouldn't be too many issues to contend with. However, that isn't the case. Aodhan's - who we met as Cartier - whole house has been decimated, and trying to rebuild the Morgane family from the ashes of his ancestral home. While trying to come to terms with his new position as master of his house, and his feelings for Brienna, he discovers a young boy hiding in his home, who he takes under his care, and whom he and Brienna care for. No one knows who the boy is, though, and when his identity is revealed, both must do all they can to save him from the justice that is being served to so many others. Also, we have so many other characters, some new, some old, who are displeased with the restoration of the monarchy, and will do just about anything to ensure that our rag-tag bunch of characters fail in their efforts.

I loved how the character growth we saw in Brienna and Aodhan in book 1 developed so much more in this book. Both have distinct roles they now have to deal with, which are a lot harder than they may have expected, both mentally and physically. They need to rely on each other, for their strength, and we see how their attraction, which may have been physical and brief in The Queen's Rising, cements and strengthens, as they do. They are a true power couple, and every part of this book proves that. The whole aspect of found family, whether platonic or romantic love, is definitely explored here, in so many regards. Even without all of the action - which there was a lot of - I would've been happy to read a book that explored the characters coming together, and becoming a family, which they all are by the end of the book. The ending tied up everything perfectly, and I've already got my eye on Ross' next book. This is definitely a series for fantasy lovers!

I think I might have liked this book even more than book one. It’s tricky. I think it depends on what you liked from book one? I personally liked the plots and plans more than the romance and I think the balance between the two is better in this sequel, largely because it’s split POV between Cartier and Brienna. Since the two of them are often off doing different things the romance is a little less in your face, there are kingdoms at stake and I personally am more invested in that then I am how two people feel about each other – that’s just me.

But yes, I think the dual POV really works, I liked Cartier’s perspective, they managed to do more than just having him as a romantic hero, he’s got a lot to do in this book but he also never outshines Brienna, it’s actually a pretty nice hero/heroine balance.

The other thing I appreciated about this book is that, where book one felt like you had to constantly be flicking back to the various family trees at the start of the book, it felt a lot more obvious who was who. Of course, that could be a quirk of how much I was paying attention or just the result of having read two books in the same world but I did feel like I had a much better handle on who was doing what (or whom…). I think because in this book you actually encounter a lot of the characters, as well as having the benefit of Cartier’s knowledge, there’s just more that the main characters can pass on to the reader.

This is a nice easy-to-read writing style. At first, I thought it was going to be too simplistic, that it would fall into that ‘so YA it hurts’ category that I find myself using all too often. But actually, I think this book does enough differently, in particular, the aforementioned balance between the male and female protagonists, as well as the fact that Brienna isn’t the character becoming Queen. While there are a lot of familiar elements to this story it still feels like it’s own thing, not like a remake of something else. Perhaps that’s just telling of what I have and haven’t read – but I hugely enjoyed reading this.

Definitely a slow start, let yourself sink back into this world, but towards the last 50% or so this got really good, to the point where I didn’t want to put it down.

If court politics mixed up with a healthy dose of action and romance is your kind of thing then I would say this is a YA duology you shouldn’t miss!

This is the second book in The Queen's Rising duology. I swear these books are so under-hyped its ridiculous! The Queen's Rising was one of my favourite books of the year and its sequel did not disappoint. This book picks up almost immediately where the first book leaves us, and I loved seeing all my favourite characters again! I adored the found family Brienna has found and the sense of belonging she finally has. I was also so excited when there was a POV from Cartier as well as Brienna! I enjoyed how the main plot wasn't the romance between Cartier and Brienna and how the aftermath of the revolution was more of this focus. I also loved the introduction of the new characters such as Neeve and Ewan as well, I couldn't help falling in love with them like I had the original crew. Ewan and Cartier's relationship was adorable, and I loved seeing them interact.

I'm hoping another book in this world is on its way because I need MORE!
