Dracula by Bram Stoker
Jonathan Harker travels to the Carpathian Mountains to finalize the sale of England’s Carfax Abbey to Transylvanian noble Count Dracula. What he doesn’t know is what Dracula is. Once Dracula sets his sights onto Jonathan’s social circle, Jonathan must accept the truth.
How had I never read this?! I have read some retellings and of course watched tons of different Dracula based movies but I had never read this. I was determined to fix that this year and I am so glad that I finally did.
It was everything I thought it would be. I can see why this has sparked so many different variations and works. I loved how it was written with diary entries, telegrams, and letters and you piece together this tale of creeping horror and haunting seduction.
You can really get a sense for how Dracula mesmerizes his victims and how he turns that charm on and their struggle to resist the temptation. I loved Mina. I thought she was such a good main character. She was courageous, fiercely loyal, and intelligent. This was weirdly romantic too! With how Dracula temps his victims, than Lucy and beau(s), and of course Mina and Jonathan. I loved the development of their relationship.
A classic work of horror that absolutely stands the test of time.

Been wanting to read this book for a long time and it did not disappoint as it was absolutely incredible. Loved all of the characters and all the twists and turns the story presented. Only complaint is that I wish the ending was longer, maybe an extra chapter to so. Regardless, I will definitely re-read in the future.

Bram Stoker didn't invent vampires, but their modern conception is largely thanks to this book. It's for good reason too! When you think of Dracula, you think of cheesy black and white, poorly acted films, then like me, you might be very pleasantly surprised with the text! Its entirely written in diary entries, and newspaper clippings, which really sets the suspenseful atmosphere, and is one reason it translates so poorly onto the screen. The characters aren't the most interesting except perhaps The Count. I also could have done with a little less of Van Helsing's extremely long winded explanations and sexist physiognomy, but I guess he has all the superstitions.

Even on a re-read this book still packs a punch, some of the oh she is too sweet to fight can become tedious, but ypu take in your stride knowing its age.
Still love all the characters and the way it seamlessly moves from each diary entry which is written totally differently to reflect the character writing (or recording) the entries.
