I'm finally ready to review this book.
This book isn't about friendship. This book isn't about gay people. This book isn't about life experienced. It is a sick imagining of the worst possible growing up and the worst possible dealing with youth trauma. The characters have no growth, no redemption, only misery. Nothing uplifting. Nothing worthy of telling. Another reviewer called it "misery porn." Yep. I agree. Trauma, abuse, sadism porn. That's it. Nothing more.
The sad part is, she is a talented and beautiful writer. Her words contain power in her story telling. It's just not a story worth telling.
Don't read it.

i am sorry i did NOT enjoy reading this book. things just keep Happening over and over and it was honestly a very hard read- not because of how tragic it was, but more because of how tragically slow the pace was. this took me 3 months to finish and i’m honestly never going to read it again.

This novel is exceptionally well-written, though certain plot points and emotional arcs are a bit belabored. At 814 pages, very little actually happens, so prospective readers should only pick this up if they crave a nuanced, painfully detailed character study that spends several decades. Readers beware: this book contains graphic descriptions of self harm and an incredible amount of suicidal ideation. It’s also almost entirely void of nuanced female characters.  (Every woman in A LITTLE LIFE is predominantly defined as a wife or girlfriend or mother).

I can understand why so many people love this book. It is heartwarming and heartbreaking all in one! Made me laugh and cry… it was a truly magnificent book from start to finish.
