A Little Life tackles heavy themes, including sexual abuse, self-harm, and suicide. While it offers moments of light through its exploration of male friendships and chosen families, the narrative becomes increasingly consumed by trauma. At times, this extremity crosses into what some readers would describe as “misery porn”, diluting the emotional impact and veering toward farce. Despite its beautiful prose and compelling character dynamics, I ultimately ended up disappointed by this book.

Did I finish this book or did it finish me? The tears I cried, the visceral anger I felt, good grief. It kept me up at night, it gave me literal heart palpitations. If any of the events that take place in this book had happened to any of my own loved ones, I would be in dire need of therapy just to stay sane. This book is a natural disaster of great magnitude put into writing, such captivating writing that I couldn’t run, hide, look away. It made me absolutely hate people. It made me love and appreciate other people - my own friends and family - even more.

Oh my god do not read this book. It is 700 pages of shitty trauma porn and I hated every second. Jude isn't a likeable character (pity ≠ liked), Willem sucks, and I WISH Malcolm and J.B. had more time to shine. Malcolm is entirely ignored for the plot to revolve solely around Jude's continuous trauma and J.B. only comes up to traumatise Jude more. It's good to write about complex traumatic experiences but holy shit the entire book is just one trauma after the other. The whole moral of the story is that some people should just kill themselves after EVERYTHING Jude's adoptive parents did for him. Justice for J.B. and Malcolm, we never got a satisfying story for them, let alone an ending. Fuck this book royally.
