This was a little boring in comparison to the first book and hard to finish. The book still deserves 3 stars for the interesting narrative

I loved this book. Rin was pissing me off, but I still was sad for her. I want her to burn everything down to the ground.

I was telling my brother about this series today and as I tried to explain the magic system in it I realized that shamans are analogous to nukes. Because they're scary as all get out, they're far more dangerous than anything else on the field and the world would be safer if they didn't exist but, "Oh heck, the other guys have one! Somebody find ours!"
And I really liked the conflict between Rin and this other character about using their powers. Between using the power of the gods to try to affect some good despite each use gradually giving the gods a foothold in the world versus a flat refusal to invoke the power and a willingness to accept defeat despite having such a power at hand. Now that I think about it, that ties into the nuke analogy. . .
Lastly, I'm interested in how Rin is very clearly not necessarily a good person. Like she's trying but she doesn't know the right thing and as she learns more, she adjusts but it's a struggle to know and do the right thing the whole time.
