I really enjoyed this book. I love Tevis’ writing style. I have never played chess in my life, but the games were written with amazing intensity.

It's so so good, better than the series by far. The suspense is amazing, it's made me want to learn chess

DID NOT FINISH: 51%

The Netflix series was better. The writing is fine, but not my style. It’s going to sound absurd based on the entire premise of this book, but there’s just too much chess and not much depth to the story otherwise. Many unnecessary uncomfortable moments for seemingly no reason, as they don’t develop the characters in any way. The series took this plot and expanded the good parts and found a way to make the chess theme much more interesting through their lens.

This book had some really good moments, but they never lasted. The pacing is atrocious and most of the book is exceptionally boring. The prose is very bland.

I wanted to like Beth, but I don’t feel much for her because her emotional struggles were largely skipped over.
At some point, I had genuinely forgotten Mrs. Wheatley died because of how little time was spent on that point. I don’t know if Beth is supposed to be extremely emotionless or if her grief was just skipped over for some reason or another.
Jolene and Mrs. Wheatley were really the only interesting characters. I felt nothing for everyone else.

There’s some good ideas here but they were never explored enough. The ending was pretty good, but the last couple of pages didn’t do it for me. Overall, a disappointing book. I spent the entire time wishing I was reading something else.
