Princess Leia's solo adventure sees her temporarily running off from the Rebellion after the Battle of Yavin to track down and protect the survivors of Alderaan (essentially anyone who was off-planet at the time, as no one really survived the actual attack). She shows that she's willing to get her hands dirty to do what's needed and what's right, that she doesn't consider herself more important than anyone else, despite her reputation as the ice princess, and by the end, shows that she's a great and inspiring leader that the Empire should be afraid of.

Perhaps it's the medium in which the story is told, but beyond refusing to sit around and do nothing when the Rebellion leadership asks her to stay put and just grieve, we don't see a lot of her emotional reaction to it. She just jumps right into the action. It could also just be the way Leia handles grief. Not everyone gets all mopey and sad. Some people need to DO something, even if just to distract themselves from it.

I've had a hard time connecting with many of the new characters introduced in the canon books that take place round the timeline of the original films. Since they're not in the films at all, I know that either they're not terribly important to the story or they die, so it leaves me wondering why I should care as much about them. Evaan Verlaine, however, is different. I liked her gradual friendship with Leia, as well as her unswerving loyalty to her queen, despite her reluctance to be friendly with her. I thought they way they resolved her part of the story when Leia left to return to the Rebellion was good. She actually had a real role to play in the story rather than simply tagging alone as a sidekick to the main character for a while.

This was definitely a more character-driven story, since we all knew already that Leia would make it back to the Rebellion in time for The Empire Strikes Back. I knew they had to succeed, so there wasn't a lot of mystery there. Instead, what made this interesting was watching Leia show what she's really capable of. She essentially takes on the Empire single-handedly (well, with Evaan's help) to rescue her subjects. She really gets a chance to shine and you can see that she wasn't trusted in a position of leadership in the Rebellion just because of her title.

This is the Princess Leia being a completely competent kick-butt rebellion princess content that George Lucas only teased us with in the original trilogy, and I am here for it.

It was nice to read a story just about everyone’s favourite princess but I believe my knowledge of the galaxy is probably a little limited to fully understand this novel. We have moved away from the characters commonly known and due to that it was complex.

A decent enough adventure, but I wouldn't say it's essential reading.

"We are Alderaan.
We answer rage with wisdom.
We answer fear with imagination.
We answer war with hope.
We are, each of us, important." -Princess Leia
