Several of these passages were really lovely. Some of this was really great writing. I've wanted to read some Vasquez for a while and I found this scrolling through my kindle. I'm glad I finally did something I've vaguely thought about for a while!
That said, I really didn't take to this book that well -- like I said, some of the writing is lovely. I feel like it's a very rich setting. This isn't very long, but it is a good set up and it feels almost luxurious. There's a depth to the writing and a certainty which can summon years of work, of a life, pretty easily. The actual topic of this book I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT and wasn't aware of until after halfway through. It is, btw, sexual assault. It's also told from a male's POV, which was a little on the nose for me considering recent news items but hey. I guess I unwittingly picked something that could be a little timely.
I liked some of this much more than others. I liked the build up. I liked the setting. Some of the less focused paragraphs were gorgeous, when the words spread out from this particular setting and these particular characters to a more macro sense of the world. That was great! There were a number of odd scenes I didn't like or didn't care for. I don't really want to read much about. I feel a bit strange about this book. There's a persistent sense of concern with memory, as well as reputation -- I think the importance of it and the elusive nature of it is central to this book. But...I just felt cold. The disconnect was too broad for me. I wish I could figure out why, but I'm struggling with it! Nonetheless, I think this was fine, but not that enjoyable.

I enjoyed Vasquez’s writing and felt Mallarino’s character felt very real. I really liked the first half, but had and issue with how sexual assault was covered in this. Samanta seemed to be used only as a plot device, there was never any really concern shown for her. She was even consistently sexualized by Mallarino which felt like and unnecessary addition. .
Some interesting ideas, some nice writing, but overall unsatisfying.

İtibarlar'ı sevdim sevmesine ama kafamda oturmayan bazı şeyler de var. Yazarın dili - ve tabi çevirmenin marifeti- oldukça iyi bence, upuzun cümleler başlarda biraz zorlasa da ilerledikçe anlatıma alıştım ve okurken çok keyif aldım. Yazarın en sevdiğim tercihlerinden biri roman boyunca tek bir karakterin peşinden gitmemize, sadece onun hikayesini okumamıza rağmen üçüncü şahıs anlatımı kullanması oldu. Bu sayede başkarakterin hep yanında olsak da aramızda belli bir mesafeyi de hissediyoruz. Bu mesafe bazı şeyleri değerlendirmeyi benim için daha kolay kıldı.
Bir diğer sevdiğim şey de Vasquez'in romana yedirerek yaptığı gerek hafıza gerekse saygınlık üzerine bazı akıl yürütmelerdi. Kesin bir yargıya varmak yerine başkarakterin yaşadığı olaylar üzerinden senaryolar sunup okuru kendi düşüncelerini oluşturması için teşvik ediyor. Ben olsam ne yapardım diye sorduğum birkaç yer var romanda ve yazar bana herhangi bir yol önermiyor, sadece başkaraktere bir tercih yaptırıp bunun olası sonuçlarını sunuyor. Hatta romanın sonunda bir netice sunmuyor da, yine bir ihtimal gösteriyor bize ama buna rağmen havada kalmış da hissetirmedi bana.
Peki neleri sevmedim? Kitabın merkezinde yer alan, başkarakterin itibarını kaybedebileceği bir tercih yapma durumu bana inandırıcı gelmedi hiç. Kariyerinde olabilecek en yüksek noktaya çıkmış, o noktada daha fazla kazanacağı ve haliyle kaybedeceği bir şey olmayan 60 küsur yaşındaki bir adamın böyle bir çelişkiyle karşılaşması biraz zorlama. Bir de romanın sonunda verdiği kararı itibarı ya da bir başka şeye değil eski karısıyla yaşadıklarına dayandırması kitapta bize varmış gibi gösterilen o tehlikeyi önemsiz kılıyor.
Parti esnasında yaşananlar da birazcık sıkıntılı bence. O ortamda o topluluğun öyle bir olayın ardından verdiği tepki daha farklı olurdu diye düşünüyorum. Yani romanda yapılan sorgulamaları sevdim ama bunların dayandırıldığı temeller oldukça zayıf benim için. Fakat böyle kısa bir hikayede bu eksikliği çok da önemsemediğimi söyleyebilirim.

I really liked this book I think it was a good reflective piece on what it means to be someone who has influence on the public, something as niche as political cartoons. i enjoyed magdalena the most. i wasn’t super hot on the ending but overall i enjoyed the story telling.
Reputations is the story of a man who, upon entering his golden years, finds himself forced to examine his life through the lens of one specific choice. It raises complex ethical and philosophical questions but leaves them for the readers to answer. While short, it is both provocative and challenging.
