It was my mistake. I admit it.

I didn't recognize the author's name when I bought the book. If I had, I doubt very much I would have still purchased it. Brian Kilmeade is a Fox News television host, and unfortunately appears to fit the stereotype that comes along with that role.

The book presents a chronological overview of the First Barbary War, with very little analysis or insight. Its main feature is very thinly-disguised Islamophobia, drawing parallels between the conflict of the early 19th century and the current "War on Terror," which is both incorrect and dangerous. The First Barbary War had little, if anything, to do with religion - and everything to do with piracy and finance. Islam, at best, was seen as *foreign*, but not evil.

Don't read the book.

Who says History has to be boring?! This book was wonderfully put together and was rather like a documentary. My heart was pounding with the action in some places.

I read the first time. I listened this time. I enjoy it when the multiple stories I have read lately tie together. This period in history was not as full of resources as more recent historical books. The author was careful to not cross over into writing fiction. Very good for the events covered.

A very interesting aspect of our history, one that was not taught to me as a child in school. The writing is steady and informative, though it suffers midway to the end, as it becomes a little dry. I'd recommend this for history fans.

Great book, could not sit it down.If you’re into US History, this is a must read.

I never knew anything about this event. I never knew that pirates were a problem for Thomas Jefferson. I learned so much from this book that it blew my mind. I enjoyed the writing style and I like the other work of Brian Kilmeade that I have read so far.

I enjoyed learning more about this war, which I hadn't even heard of until its mention in a documentary about Jefferson I saw recently. While good information was provided, I think this is a rather brief accounting of events and will be on the lookout for a book that covers the topic in greater depth. I listened to the audio version, read by the author, and was a bit turned off that he seemed to be yelling throughout the recording.

It was an interesting read on a part of history I knew nothing about. But the entire book was building on to one battle that was a single chapter.

I think we all read this because of the Hamilton Musical. While this was a great read, that is not fair to any book.
