What a fantastic book! Wonderfully written— Ironmonger really captivates you with his prose. I didn’t think I would enjoy an apocalyptic book about a pandemic during COVID, but I actually felt some newfound optimism (it could’ve been so much worse!) and a little bit of anxiety (is this what the next pandemic will look like?) while reading this.
I particularly like the way flashbacks are threaded through the story, and how we get to know and feel intimate with the villagers of St. Pieran like Joe does. Although I still don’t completely understand the Polly storyline I can appreciate that it made the ending all the more satisfying.
