I loved the idea of a woman-centered & queer retelling of a 14th century Chinese text and it didn't disappoint. The action is fast-paced and entertaining, complete with likeable characters. I was looking for something like Tales of the Otori and it was somewhat similar. A great start to my reading year.

I really wanted to enjoy this, but found myself wishing it was more character-driven. I enjoyed all of the narrating characters and wished we had gotten more time with each of them and more character development. Despite being full of military conquests and battles, the pacing dragged for me and I hurried through it to finish. I liked the writing but it just wasn’t compelling enough to keep me captivated.

The Water Outlaws is SO well written but it's also just A Lot. Be very mindful of all the content warnings! It also skews a lot more heavily into military fiction than I really enjoy. I liked the world and the characters, but I spent most of the book ready for it to be over.

Read mainly in pubs in England and Scotland. Loved the magic and the story building in this book. Definitely has some graphic parts that I had to get through. But I really enjoyed the different perspectives and how gender was talked about. A damn good book.
