Comforting. Friendly. Shafts of humor.

A cute book. Except for the weird Mandy subplot!? Felt out of place to me. This book kinda felt like the out-of-time books I got randomly at the library when I was younger (which, to be fair, is how I got this book, also). Slow-going, mostly predictable, feel-goody-but-a-little-quirky. Except for Mandy's internet porn, of course. That was very modern. The social commentary and wit first sucked me in, but i felt both bottom out towards the end. Good to read older characters (these ones even with an active sex life). Do I also want to randomly move to my ex-wife's garden shed for my retirement years in a pretty sea-side town that has little, but definitely enough, of everything, instead of living in the billionaire-children populated tech metropolis? Maybe.

I really enjoyed this. Right story, relatable and realistic characters and relationships, the occasional funny commentary of modern life. I listened via Hoopla and would recommend if you’re looking for a fun read, not too heavy.

A delightful story. Stephen McCauley writes with wit and an open heart, and it is always a treat to see how things might work out.

I had the pleasure of having Stephen McCauley as my Creative Writing professor at Brandeis. His classes were always dynamic and inspiring to my own relationship with writing. 'My Ex-Life' was a heartwarming, unpretentious tale of two people with a strong connection finding each other again years later in life. Nothing to complain about with the side characters either. Highly recommend to fiction lovers-- and especially lovers of interior design + Airbnb!
