I adored the characters, loved the tension and romance and fire between them, and it was solely that relationship that kept me hooked. There was a lot of other stuff going on that made it interesting and fleshed it out but their chemistry was SO GOOD. I feel like there were a few things that were kind of unrealistic and just kind of felt like lazy ways to resolve conflict at the end,
like how both sutherland and her horrible would-be husband die together?? kind of seems like a cop out, and also a wild coincidence how she finds out she’s an heiress with a huge home and an inheritance??
but overall really good i couldn’t put it down

Brynmore is to married off to a completely evil jackass so she decides to ruin herself to get the wedding called off. She almost backs out of the idea until she sees Maxwell, her childhood crush is back in town, so she figures out which room he's staying in and waits for him in his bed.
Maxwell is not happy to be back in town, he hates this place and all the reminders of growing up a bastard, so he gets soused his first night back and doesn't recognize Bryn and believes her story about being a whore.
When he wakes up the next day and realizes he deflowered a virgin he tracks down the lady in question, he'll not have any child of his growing up a bastard. He steals her away and we get into a journey filled with attempts on his life, people trying to steal Bryn and force her into her original marriage and a few other twists and turns. Bryn is sweet, Maxwell is stoic, so many feels!!

This is my first time reading, and finishing, a historical romance. I’ve always been a firm believer that they just weren’t for me but after falling into the Bridgerton craze I knew I needed to try again. Low and behold, this book shows up in a sale email and since Laura Trentham is an author I trust and love, I knew that this was the book that I needed to read.

I’m so glad that I did!! I loved everything about this story.

The innocent but brave heroine, the moody hero, the tension and chemistry between them, the action, a touch of suspense and a just the right amount of humor made this a really great read!

This might be my new favorite regency romance series. RIYL the Spy in the House series or if you want something like Bridgerton with an edgier subplot

I really liked the first book in this series but this one just dragged. The plot felt so contrived and then seemingly just petered out into nothing. I would have liked to see either more commitment to the mystery/spying/action plot or the danger should have been scaled down, because as it played out I found it very unsatisfying.
