Found it pretty hard to get into at first, as I struggled to keep track of what was actually happening. Really glad I didn’t give up, as it is such a complex and powerful read.

Read this as I loved Oranges are not the only fruit & written on the body, so this is definitely up there as one of my favorites from Winterson now. :)

I've read a couple of Winterson's more modern works and been sorely disappointed as they were fairly standard in both content and writing style and I've read papers talking about her unique writing style. This book was exactly what I was hoping for from her previous works. Its use of adventure story tropes mixed with shifting settings/time made for a compelling feminist message without it seeming cliche. I felt such affection for the dog woman, especially with how she spoke about herself and her relationship to motherhood. I can't help but feeling that there were things that I missed before I fully understood the conceit of the story so I can't wait to reread this again in the future!

magical realism and gorgeous imagination. the title is random, considering the actual content of the book, but love this author! :)
