This book was okay. The description was super interesting but the story itself was predictable and a bit boring. I just really wanted more to from this book.

I thought I’d love this more than I did. There was so much great potential, and a lot of good ideas for a fantasy world. The magic system and different magical creatures were interesting. I wanted to know more about it.
The book suffered from pacing issues; some parts were plodding along, while the end was so rushed. There were too many big plot points that weren’t really fleshed out enough or connected to the story as a whole.
The romance pseudo-love triangle was weird. It didn’t really seem well developed. The one spice scene was weirdly placed. The plot twist was ok.
I really liked Lore, and because there were so many different fantasy ideas (magic library, orphan apothecary shop, grimoire) jammed into one book, I lost track of her history a little.
I also did not like the cliffhanger ending.

Finishing the book felt like I was eating a bag of my favorite chips and didn’t realize I was on the last one. I need more.

I just very sadly don’t care for this. I had this preordered when it was going to be indie published, then got very excited to hear it got picked up traditionally, and now after listening to 25% I’m not jiving with it. Alas!
