I'm really struggling with rating because it dragged in miscommunication part, but Eliza and Graham are sweet. In the end, this is the most wholesome marriage in trouble.

This book was not one I expected to like as much as I did. I thought I was getting into a cookie-cutter romance but what I got was a exploration into what happens when a marriage or relationship loses its magic.

The main characters are on their way to an expensive five year anniversary getaway when they realize they have absolutely nothing to say to each other on the six hour drive there. They feel closed off from one another and are in the dreaded "roommates" stage of their relationship. When they are told they accidentally booked two rooms at the hotel due to a reservation mix up, Eliza comes up with a plan as a hail-mary for their marriage: to be strangers on this trip and learn to date each other again. The story is about rediscovering connection with your partner, but it is also about rediscovering yourself and the person you actually want to be.

I really enjoyed this book and I appreciate that it deviated from the modern popular romance. It took me a few chapters to get hooked, but once I did, I was fully in.

I'm honestly not sure how to rate this. It was missing some of the glee and intensity that I've grown used to in romance novels, but it was underscored by this deep thread of sincere belief. None of the butterflies of a first meeting, but perhaps a healthier strong core?

This was a good book, I think. I know it's technically still romance but it felt a bit like reading out of genre for me all the same. The tropes and themes were all very different so I have a harder time knowing whether they were used well or underutilized. What I can say is that I cared deeply about the charecters and I really adored the underlying message of the book. I did also enjoy reading it, but if I'm totally honest that last one is an easy bar to clear. I am glad I read it, I really almost didn't.

pretty much retelling of the marriage counseling 101 textbook.
no plots, no twists, no story.

3-not enough dialogue for my liking, but a unique enough premise that makes some good points.
