The motto of the 20th century is probably going to be ‘Don’t panic but we are fucked’. Philosopher Zizek aims to explore how we move forward in the face of so many large scale, creeping disasters.
I’m calling this ‘read’ rather than DNF as I’ve read 55% and thoroughly skim read the rest (is that an oxymoron?) rather than abandoning it after a point. But gotta be honest with myself - feels cheeky, like when a 60 page short story gets counted as a book in your year end total 🙈
I couldn’t make it solidly through for 2 reasons; it’s rambling and circuitous, but also it’s making me ANXIOUS. The central premise is interesting - we can best tackle the looming crisis’ facing us by behaving as if they have already happened. Whilst his musings on Isr/Palastine are interesting given what we have seen occur in Gaza, he mainly focuses on Russia, and how WW3 has already started. Very pertinent, especially with the 🍊 prick’s return and currently levelling up of insanity… but it’s putting me in a reading slump.
This book will have its audience, but I know enough about Putin’s political ideology and playbook to only want to read about it when there is clear discussion of how to best handle it - this feels more like a book to convince people that we should not underplay the Russian risk. Also, I’m not a big philosophy reader, I lose patience with the circling of the point - I get that the discussion to get to the conclusion is part of the intellectual journey, but when I can see glimpses of the destination and we the. wander off on a conversational tangent I’m… frustrated. I’ll always be more of a ‘make a point, then demonstrate how you built it up’ reader.
