Fast paced and so exciting! The two MCs (Christiana and Stan) are so adorable, and they are mixed up in some rough things so mind the CW. The dialog and action in this baby novella were so well done - I felt like I was watching a movie! Also, I would like to read the entire Lilywhite Boys series now?

I can't decide on a rating for this, so I'll leave this blank.

"The Rat-Catcher's Daugher" is a sweet novella about a music-hall singer who is a woman on stage, and a man during other times (and a woman in her mind), and her admirer, a man who makes sure stolen goods find their way into rich people's pockets.

On the plus side, the characters ring true, and you can really like them. They have good conversations, and things get a bit awkward at all the right places (as they do). There's a sprinkling of plot, but not too much, and it feels like it's absolutely ok to not be the sort of person who rushes around saving people. It's an indulgent fantasy (of the imagination sort, not the magic and unexpected princes sort) and that's quite enjoyable to read.

On the minus side, there's very little that actually happens, and the plot feels a bit disconnected. The antagonist in the beginning is still the antagonist at the end, but more out of random evilness than anything else. I can't decide if this is a bug or a feature.

Wellp. Either way, it's enjoyable and comfortable to read.

The romance is sweet and lovely, but it's the defenestration that really made this story for me :)

Quick read, easy to get through but I didn't feel like I had enough time to get invested in the characters since this was a novella.

When he’s quietly your biggest fan & comes to all your performances so he sends his gangster friends to go save you from the bad guys who are about to beat you to a pulp>>>>

I’m pretty picky about novellas & short stories, but The Rat-Catcher’s Daughter was absolutely delightful and I have NO notes. It’s only four chapters long, but manages to pack in both an incredibly sweet romance between a trans f music hall singer and an asexual fence who dreams of running his own clock shop, AND a plot between rival gangsters that Stan and Christiana find themselves caught up in. There’s danger and drama and kidnapping and defenestration and also the most gentle, lovely romance, and I had so much fun with it.

If you’re gonna pick this one up (which I recommend!!) be aware that there is quite a bit of violence and the opening scene involves misgendering & a threat of violence, but while the villains are pretty,, you know,, ~villainous~, Stan and Christiana make up for it by being so soft and careful with each other 🥹

CW: Transphobia, violence, deadnaming/misgendering, sexual harassment
